Roblox's Child Safety Shift Sparks Industry-Wide Implications
The Roblox platform has been at the center of a controversy surrounding child safety and advertising. The platform faced hundreds of lawsuits related to its handling of youth advertising and payouts, leading to significant changes in its policies.
Roblox's decision to partner with SuperAwesome for COPPA-compliant contextual advertising sent a strong signal that behavioral targeting is not the path forward for kids' content. Instead, Roblox opted for contextual ads, which are built around scenes and contexts rather than profiles or IDs.
The platform also introduced an 18+ DevEx exchange rate premium, rewarding adult spend with a higher rate of return. This change incentivized developers to prioritize verifiable-age monetization over other methods.
Web3 game teams would do well to take note of these developments, as the same child-safety laws apply to them regardless of their blockchain-based nature. COPPA, GDPR-K, and national kids' codes all still require compliance with age-related regulations.
