US Indo-Pacific Command Explores Bitcoin's Protocol Architecture

The US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) has taken a significant step in exploring the potential of Bitcoin's protocol architecture for national security purposes. As part of its research into blockchain technology, INDOPACOM is running a live Bitcoin node and conducting operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol.

Admiral Samuel Paparo, the Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command, made the revelation during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on April 21, 2026. In response to questions from Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Paparo confirmed that INDOPACOM has been operating a Bitcoin node and conducting tests to evaluate the protocol's potential in securing military networks.

Paparo emphasized that INDOPACOM views Bitcoin as a 'computer science tool' rather than an economic asset, highlighting its core architecture of cryptography, blockchain, and proof-of-work. The Admiral noted that the protocol's ability to impose real-world costs on adversaries through proof-of-work protocols makes it a valuable asset in cybersecurity.
