Google Prepares Quantum-Safe Chrome Certificates with Merkle Tree Technology
Google has announced plans to improve the resilience of Chrome's HTTPS certificates against potential threats from quantum computers. The tech giant is set to transition its certificate system to Merkle Tree Certificates (MTCs), which use compact proofs to eliminate bandwidth usage associated with classical X.509 certificate chains.
MTCs offer a number of advantages, including the ability to shrink authentication data in the TLS handshake and decouple the size of transmitted data from the security strength of the cryptographic algorithm. This ensures that post-quantum web connections are as fast as today's internet while providing stronger security.
