IRGC Crypto Activity Sparks Compliance Concerns Amid Military Tensions
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has intercepted an enemy cruise missile near Khorramabad, according to reports. This comes amid sustained military tension between Iran and the US-Israeli axis, with Khorramabad already in the spotlight after confirmed strikes on the Imam Ali Missile Base earlier this year.
The IRGC is not only a key component of Iran's military, but also one of the largest state-linked actors in global cryptocurrency. It controls approximately 50% of the country's crypto activity, with significant implications for compliance and sanctions enforcement.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, IRGC-affiliated addresses received over $3 billion in cryptocurrency flows. This represents a substantial portion of the country's overall crypto activity, with $8 million being sanctioned by Israeli authorities in July 2026. The sanctioned wallets collectively valued at around this amount pale in comparison to the quarterly flow.
The IRGC's significant crypto footprint has far-reaching implications for exchanges, DeFi protocols, and OTC desks worldwide. Sanctions enforcement that successfully disrupts these channels could remove meaningful buy pressure from certain markets, particularly stablecoins and privacy-focused tokens.
