Strategy Inc Bitcoin Sale Sparks Concern Over Valuation Risk
Strategy Inc, a software company with a significant bitcoin balance sheet, has found itself at the center of attention as it considers selling some of its holdings to fund a dividend. The move has left investors wondering whether this signals a retreat from its bitcoin strategy or a strategic decision to defend its capital structure.
The company's financing model now includes recurring obligations on several preferred-stock lines, which rank ahead of common stock and usually pay dividends. This shift has put the spotlight back on Michael Saylor's MSTR stock, with some analysts raising their price targets for the company. Lance Vitanza at TD Cowen raised his price target to $395 from $385, while Joseph Vafi at Canaccord Genuity lifted his target to $224 from $185.
However, a large bitcoin sale could have significant implications for the asset that underpins much of Strategy's valuation. The company has warned that swings in bitcoin prices, financing terms, and tax treatment could cause results to differ from management's expectations. As investors await Monday's open, they are left to digest the shift in Strategy's strategy.
