Kraken Rejects Extortionists' Demands Amid Crypto Crime Surge
Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has become the latest target of cyber-extortionists, who claim to possess sensitive client data. According to reports, the exchange was approached by a group demanding payment in exchange for not releasing the allegedly compromised data. However, Kraken's Chief Security Officer, Nick Percoco, confirmed that the exchange would not be paying any ransom.
The incident is particularly notable given the surge in crypto-related crime, with losses reaching $178 million in March 2026, according to blockchain intelligence firm Nominis. The primary culprit behind these attacks appears to be 'authorization abuse,' where hackers trick users or contractors into approving malicious transactions or providing access credentials.
