Bitcoin's Quantum Threat: A Potential Drain of 6.9 Million Coins
The Bitcoin network is facing a potential threat from quantum computers, which could drain around 6.9 million coins, including those owned by Satoshi Nakamoto.
Quantum computers use a fundamentally different kind of math than regular computers, and they can break certain types of encryption that are used to protect wallet addresses. In the case of Bitcoin, the problem lies in the elliptic curve cryptography used to secure wallets, which can be broken by a powerful enough computer.
Ethereum has already started working on a solution to this problem, with a formal quantum-resistant program since 2018 and a dedicated team working on the migration. The Ethereum Foundation has also launched a website to publish its progress and provide updates on the migration process.
