Pharma Company Dives into Crypto Market with $147M Stake in SKY Governance Token
NovaBay Pharmaceuticals, a small-cap pharmaceutical company with a market capitalization of around $30 million, has undergone a significant transformation. The company has announced its decision to abandon its pharmaceutical business and rebrand as Stablecoin Development Corporation.
The rebranded company will focus on developing stablecoins and participating in blockchain protocols. As part of this shift, NovaBay disclosed that it holds approximately 2.06 billion SKY governance tokens, valued at around $147 million. This represents a significant investment in the Sky protocol, which issues the USDS stablecoin and generates revenue through on-chain lending.
The company's strategy is to operate as an 'on-chain holding company,' with returns tied to staking parameters and governance rather than speculative price exposure. The SKY tokens were acquired through a combination of open-market purchases and a private placement with several investors. The company has also received additional tokens through staking rewards, which have generated over 10% annual yield.
