Farage Defends Undeclared Crypto Gift Amid Investigation
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is under scrutiny for an undeclared £5 million gift from Tether stakeholder Christopher Harborne. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has launched an investigation into whether Farage should have declared the gift after winning his seat in 2024.
Farage defended the gift, saying it was a 'purely private matter' and that he could spend it on anything, including luxury cars or horses, as he sees fit. He claimed the gift was given to him unconditionally for his long-standing advocacy of Brexit, not for any specific crypto-friendly policy.
Farage has styled himself a 'champion' of cryptocurrency, calling for a national Bitcoin reserve and lower capital-gains taxes on digital assets. However, he downplayed the potential influence of Harborne's gift on his policy positions, saying that even if London became a major crypto-trading hub, it would still be a small part of the global market.
Farage's response to the investigation has been met with skepticism by Labour, which accused him of dodging scrutiny. If found to have broken the rules, Farage could face suspension from Parliament and potentially a by-election in his constituency.
