FBI Warns of Crypto ATM Scam Surge Exceeding $388 Million in Losses
The FBI has issued a warning about a surge in crypto ATM scam losses, with Americans losing over $388 million to such schemes.
According to the agency's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), there were over 13,400 complaints related to crypto ATM scams in 2025, with losses exceeding $388 million. This marks a significant increase from the previous year, with a 23% rise in complaints and a 58% increase in losses.
The scams typically involve cybercriminals instructing victims to withdraw cash from ATMs and deposit it into crypto kiosks. The funds are then transferred to attacker-controlled wallets. Individuals over 50 were disproportionately affected, reporting over $302 million in losses.
Several states have taken action against cryptocurrency kiosks, with Minnesota, Indiana, and Tennessee banning them statewide. The FBI advises the public to be cautious of unsolicited instructions and to verify communications before sending any funds or information.
