Hong Kong retiree falls prey to triple crypto investment scam

A recent string of crypto investment scams has resulted in a significant loss for a Hong Kong retiree. The victim, aged 66, was targeted by self-proclaimed 'crypto experts' who promised easy gains and help to recover losses.

The scammers initially contacted the retiree via WhatsApp, claiming to be virtual currency investment experts. They promised steady gains if the victim followed their advice and transferred $180,000 to a wallet controlled by the scammer.

However, once the funds were transferred, the scammer disappeared, prompting the victim to file a police report. Despite this setback, the retiree continued to seek out new investment opportunities, eventually falling prey to two more scams in January and March of this year.

The total loss for the victim amounts to approximately $840,000 over six months. The case serves as a warning about the growing trend of Web3-related fraud, with many individuals falling victim to promises of easy gains and guaranteed returns.
