Iran-Uruguay Deal Brings Crypto Sanctions Workarounds into Focus

A draft memorandum of understanding between Iran and Washington has been finalized, covering Tehran's nuclear program and sanctions exemptions. The agreement includes a proposal for Iran to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium under international supervision rather than export it.

The proposed dilution plan would see Iran reduce its estimated 440 kg of uranium enriched to 60% on its own soil, with international inspectors present. This approach is seen as a diplomatic resolution that preserves sovereignty by the Iranian side, while US representatives view it as a pathway toward dismantling Iran's nuclear capabilities.

The negotiations are taking place under the Trump administration in 2026, following a period of heightened tensions that included US and Israeli strikes on Iranian facilities. If the deal progresses, it could unlock a surge in Iranian oil exports, easing supply pressures and reducing geopolitical risk premiums across equities and commodities.
