Cardano Activates First Fully Onchain-Governed Hard Fork

Cardano has successfully activated its first fully onchain-governed hard fork on mainnet, marking a significant milestone in blockchain governance. The Van Rossem hard fork, named after Cardano developer Alexander van Rossem, was activated on July 18, 2026, introducing Protocol Version 11 and several technical improvements to the network.

The upgrade focuses on Plutus script improvements, including new primitives and cost-model adjustments designed to lower smart-contract execution costs. These changes give developers more flexibility when building decentralized applications on the Cardano blockchain.

The hard fork activated smoothly around 21:44 UTC on July 18, with node operators upgrading in advance to prevent chain splits. The successful activation required coordination among ecosystem partners, SPOs, DApps, developers, and exchanges across multiple networks to guarantee a safe mainnet event.
