Wikipedia's Crypto Blind Spot: Only 67 Top Projects Listed

The cryptocurrency industry is facing a disadvantage due to its underrepresentation on Wikipedia. According to a report by Chainstory, only 67 out of the 1,000 largest crypto projects by market cap have a Wikipedia entry.

Some prominent projects, including Hyperliquid and Sui, are missing from the online encyclopedia. The lack of coverage is attributed to Wikipedia's strict editorial filtering, which was designed to protect the platform from 'noise' during earlier crypto cycles.

However, Chainstory argues that this approach is no longer effective in today's landscape. The report cites data from Profound, showing that 7.8% of links to sources on ChatGPT go to Wikipedia, compared to 1.8% and 1.1% to Reddit and Forbes.

The lack of representation on Wikipedia has significant implications for the crypto industry. Chainstory notes that Wikipedia's guidelines for crypto-centric news organizations describe them as 'overwhelmingly enthusiastic' about cryptocurrencies, making it difficult for projects to get listed.
