UK Cracks Down on Foreign Influence with Cryptocurrency Donation Ban
The UK government has taken a significant step towards protecting its democracy from external interference by banning cryptocurrency donations to political parties.
According to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the move is designed to prevent illicit finance from posing a 'stark' danger to the country's democratic institutions. In a statement to lawmakers, he emphasized that 'we will act decisively to protect our democracy' from outside meddling.
The ban on cryptocurrency donations could have significant implications for the hard-right party Reform UK, which has been a vocal advocate of accepting digital currency donations. The party's deputy leader, Richard Tice, argued that cryptocurrencies are a legitimate means of investing and earning income within the law.
However, former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft, who reviewed foreign financial interference in politics for the government, expressed concern about the potential for untraceable digital currency donations to be used as a vehicle for channeling foreign money into the UK's political system. He advised that cryptocurrency donations should be banned temporarily until regulation catches up with the technology.
