DeFi Hacks Decline in Q1 2026 Amid DRIFT Protocol Crisis
The DeFi ecosystem has faced significant challenges in recent years, with numerous hacks and attacks resulting in substantial losses for investors.
According to data from DefiLlama, the first quarter of 2026 saw a notable decline in DeFi hacks, with over $168 million stolen compared to the previous year's $1.58 billion loss. This decrease can be attributed to the absence of massive exploits like the one that occurred on Bybit in 2025.
The largest heist of Q1 2026 was Step Finance's $40 million private key breach, which highlighted weaknesses in private key management within the DeFi ecosystem. Other notable incidents included a $26.4 million ETH drain from Truebit and Resolv Labs' private key-targeted attack.
However, the DRIFT protocol attack proved to be a major crisis for the DeFi community. The incident resulted in a $285 million private key leak, with attackers linked to North Korean groups targeting complex infrastructure and access controls.
