Polish Leader Accuses Russian-Linked Crypto Firm of Influencing Presidential Election

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made a series of allegations against Russian-linked cryptocurrency firm Zondacrypto, claiming that it has sponsored Polish politicians and promoted specific political forces. According to Tusk, the firm's financial success is linked to 'Russian money' and its connections to the Bratva mafia group in Russia.

Tusk alleged that Zondacrypto had provided financial support to some Polish politicians from the former national-conservative government, as well as sponsoring a meeting of The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Rzeszow, eastern Poland, last year. During this event, Kristi Noem, then US Homeland Security Secretary, praised presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki and encouraged attendees to elect him.

The CPAC meeting took place just five days before the Polish presidential elections, which were a tight contest between a liberal candidate backed by Tusk's government and Nawrocki. Tusk claimed that Nawrocki was 'fully aware' of Zondacrypto's connections when he vetoed new regulations on the crypto-assets market.

Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the president's office, responded to Tusk's accusations by saying that Nawrocki did not oppose the need for regulation but just the proposed model. The government has stated that the new regulations aim to bring Poland into compliance with European Union rules on crypto-assets.
