Aave's Governance Battle: A Decentralization Dilemma Unfolds
Aave, one of decentralized finance's (DeFi) largest lending protocols, has been at the center of a heated debate about its governance structure. The disagreement centers on whether the network should remain a neutral, open platform or move towards a more coordinated model shaped by major contributors.
The issue has been brewing for months, with tensions escalating over the distribution of revenue generated by Aave's front-end interfaces. In December 2025, discussions about interface fees exposed deeper disagreements about value capture and incentives.
Aave Labs' proposal, 'Aave Will Win,' aims to redirect all revenue generated by Aave-branded products back to the DAO treasury. However, this plan has been met with resistance from some contributors who argue that it blurs the line between independent DAO governance and major contributor influence.
