FBI Reports Record-Breaking Cybercrime Losses in 2025
The FBI has released its annual Internet Crime Report for 2025, detailing the growing threat of cybercrime in the US. The report shows that Americans lost an estimated $20.9 billion to cybercrime last year, with cryptocurrency-related fraud being a significant contributor.
Cryptocurrency crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with scammers using tactics such as 'pig butchering' schemes and fake exchanges to deceive victims. Investment fraud also accounted for a substantial portion of losses, with over $10.7 billion lost in 2025.
The report highlights the vulnerability of certain age groups, particularly those aged 60 and above, who account for a significant proportion of losses due to investment traps, romance scams, and tech support fraud. The top three states affected by cybercrime were California, Texas, and Florida.
