Thai Authorities Crack Down on Crypto Mining Network Accused of Laundering $300 Million

Thai authorities have issued arrest warrants for eight individuals connected to an alleged crypto mining network accused of laundering over $300 million per year through online scams and gambling operations.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has expanded its probe into the network, which is suspected of using cash mules and stealing electricity to power mining rigs. The resulting cryptocurrency is then used as a vehicle for money laundering.

At the center of the investigation is Chinese businessman Wang Yicheng, who has become a primary fugitive in the case. US authorities have previously seized assets exceeding $17.8 million linked to him as part of a separate digital asset fraud case, which resulted in losses totaling over 2 billion baht.

The network's use of electricity theft is significant, with industrial-scale crypto mining consuming enormous amounts of power. By tapping into the grid illegally, the network kept operating costs artificially low while generating cryptocurrency assets at scale.
