Binance Pledges $250K to Ebola Response Efforts in Africa
Crypto giant Binance has pledged $250,000 to support Ebola response efforts in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The funds will be divided equally between the Uganda Red Cross Society and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), with a focus on emergency medical treatment, protective equipment for health workers, infection prevention, and community awareness campaigns.
The outbreak began in eastern DRC's Ituri province on May 15 and has since spread to 26 health zones nationwide. The DRC has recorded 635 confirmed cases and 127 deaths, while Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases, including two deaths. Binance's donation is part of a broader funding push that includes commitments from governments and multilateral bodies.
The response efforts face several challenges, including insecurity, displacement, and community mistrust in eastern DRC. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on May 15.
