Bitcoin Seen as Threat to Authoritarian Governments: US Lawmaker
A recent House roundtable on cryptocurrency use under authoritarian rule featured a bullish view of Bitcoin from Representative William Timmons (R-SC). The session, titled 'Two Sides of a Digital Coin,' focused on how decentralized digital assets can help people facing state controls over money and information.
Timmons described Bitcoin as a challenge to authoritarian control, stating that it could mark the 'beginning of the end' of all such governments. He emphasized that regimes restrict banking access, impose currency controls, and limit outside financial support.
The lawmaker highlighted the potential for cryptocurrency to be an essential tool for dissidents, journalists, and activists who risk everything to get the truth out under repressive rule.
