Third-Placed Teams Secure World Cup Spots as Expanded Format Takes Shape
The FIFA World Cup's expanded format has added drama to this year's group stage standings. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador, and Sweden have mathematically confirmed their spots in the round of 16 as three of the eight best third-placed teams.
Each nation finished with four points from their respective group campaigns. Bosnia secured their spot with a 3-1 victory over host nation Qatar, while Sweden drew 1-1 with Japan and Ecuador also ended on four points.
The expanded format sees 12 groups of four teams, with the best eight third-placed teams advancing to the knockout rounds based on points, goal difference, and goals scored. This is the first World Cup to use a 48-team format, a historic expansion of the tournament.
FIFA's partnership with Kraken, the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter, has brought digital asset education programs and fan engagement initiatives across North America and Europe. FIFA Collect's migration to a custom EVM-compatible blockchain on Avalanche technology also gives FIFA tighter control over transaction costs and user experience for collectors.
