Chainlink's Smart Value Recapture Upgrade Boosts DeFi Infrastructure

Chainlink's Smart Value Recapture (SVR) is a mechanism designed to recapture Oracle Extractable Value (OEV), a subset of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). OEV arises when oracle price updates trigger liquidations in lending protocols, allowing external searchers and block builders to extract value. However, with the recent upgrade on Ethereum mainnet, Chainlink's SVR now supports multiple orderflow auctions running in parallel, increasing competition among searchers and raising revenue for DeFi protocols like Aave.

The new update, known as 'orderflow auction multiplexing', allows multiple auction providers to operate in parallel. This change has several direct results, including reduced inclusion delay for oracle price updates, higher OEV recapture rates for integrated protocols, and improved system resilience through provider redundancy. Chainlink advises searchers to integrate with all supported orderflow auction providers to stay competitive.

Aave is a clear example of SVR in practice. The lending protocol requires collateralized positions to stay above a health factor threshold. When an oracle update reveals a borrower is undercollateralized, their position is eligible for liquidation. With SVR, that liquidation opportunity is auctioned through Flashbots before the price update reaches the public mempool. The winning searcher executes the liquidation, earns the liquidation bonus, and shares part of the auction payment with Aave and Chainlink.
