FBI Seizes Record-Breaking $8 Billion in Cryptocurrency as Part of Global Scam Compound Crackdown
The FBI has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat organized crime, seizing a record-breaking $8 billion in cryptocurrency as part of an intercontinental crackdown on 'scam compounds'.
According to sources, the operation involves multiple countries and agencies working together to disrupt the activities of groups that have been targeting Americans with online scams and human trafficking. The FBI estimates that these groups have been responsible for stealing millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims, including a $3 million loss reported by one individual who fell victim to an online romance scam.
As part of the operation, authorities have arrested hundreds of suspects and seized thousands of smartphones, office equipment, and other assets from suspected scam compounds. The FBI has also partnered with Starlink, providing geolocation data to help identify scammers using satellite terminals. Through this partnership, over 7,000 terminals in Myanmar were suspended.
