Coinbase Institutional Dominates Crypto Market with Full-Service Prime Brokerage

Coinbase Institutional has taken a significant step forward in its mission to provide comprehensive services to the cryptocurrency market. By becoming the only full-service prime brokerage in crypto, the firm has established itself as a leader in the space, offering a suite of services that rival those offered by traditional financial institutions.

The definition of a prime broker is well-established on Wall Street: trading, custody, financing, derivatives, and cross-margining are all essential components. In crypto, however, there is an additional layer - staking. According to John D'Agostino, head of strategy at Coinbase Institutional, if a firm can offer all of these services at scale, it is considered a prime.

While traditional prime brokers like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley dominate the equities and fixed income markets, the crypto space has historically been fragmented. Firms have stitched together custody from one provider, derivatives from another, and financing elsewhere. However, Coinbase's flagship platform, Prime, offers all of these services natively, making it the only true full-service prime in crypto.
