Cryptos $17B Private Key Losses Over Decade Spark Wallet Security Fears
Crypto users have lost more than $17 billion to private key attacks over the past decade. According to DefiLlama, there were 518 recorded incidents of private key compromise between 2016 and 2026.
Of these incidents, 22.3% involved brute force methods, while 18.2% were attributed to unknown techniques. Phishing attacks targeting multi-signature wallets accounted for 10% of the total.
The pattern shows that losses are increasingly tied to credential weaknesses rather than flaws in protocol code. Wallet security and user behavior are contributing factors, according to crypto trading firm GSR. Smart contract audits alone are no longer enough to protect users, the firm warns.
