Binance Faces Senate Scrutiny as Judge Dismisses Terror Funding Lawsuit
A recent court ruling has shed light on the ongoing legal challenges faced by cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
A Manhattan federal judge dismissed a lawsuit that accused Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao of enabling terrorist groups, citing lack of evidence to support these claims. The plaintiffs had alleged that hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency passed through Binance to and from foreign organizations, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and al Qaeda.
Despite the dismissal, Binance is facing pressure from Washington regarding its compliance with sanctions regulations. Senator Richard Blumenthal has written to Binance's CEO, questioning the company's handling of allegedly suspicious transactions worth $1.7 billion involving Iranian-backed organizations and Russia's 'shadow fleet' of oil tankers.
Binance has denied these allegations, stating that it prohibits Iranian users from using its platform and has a rigorous compliance operation with over 1,500 personnel globally.
