SEC Sues Donald Basile Over Alleged $16 Million Bitcoin Latinum Fraud Scheme

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a high-profile enforcement action against Donald Basile, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency space. According to the complaint filed by the SEC, Basile is accused of orchestrating a $16 million fraud scheme using the cryptocurrency Bitcoin Latinum.

Basile allegedly made false statements to investors about the token's insurance and collateralization, claiming that it was backed by actual assets. However, an investigation by the SEC revealed that no such insurance or collateral existed.

The regulator claims that Basile used two companies under his control, Monsoon Blockchain Corp. and GIBF GP Inc., to offer investors Simple Agreements for Future Tokens (SAFTs) that guaranteed future deliveries of Bitcoin Latinum. However, millions of dollars were allegedly misused by Basile for personal expenses, including purchasing property, paying off credit card debts, and buying a horse worth $160,000.

The SEC seeks to permanently bar Basile from engaging in any further activities in the securities industry, as well as order him to pay back investors with interest. The agency is also seeking civil fines and disqualification from holding any management position at a publicly held firm.
