Bitcoin Options Implied Volatility Hits Record Lows
Crypto analyst Murphy has pointed out that Bitcoin's options implied volatility (IV) is currently at record lows. The 1-week IV stands at 33%, while the 1-month IV is at 34%, both below the historical range of 40%. This could indicate significant price swings in the market.
According to Murphy, there have been two similar instances this year where the IV was below 40% for a prolonged period. In January, it stayed low for 15 days before Bitcoin dropped from $97,000 to $62,000. In April, it remained low for 14 days before Bitcoin fell from $82,000 to $60,000.
Murphy attributed the low IV to market consensus alignment, accumulation of volatility arbitrage funds, and the short gamma mechanism of market makers, which amplify the impact of unexpected events.
