DOJ Drops Charges Against $722 Million BitClub Network Ponzi Scheme Mastermind

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is planning to drop criminal charges against Matthew Goettsche, the alleged mastermind behind the $722 million BitClub Network Ponzi scheme. The case was set for trial six and a half years after his indictment in 2019.

The DOJ's decision follows a memo from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in April 2025 instructing the department to end its 'regulation by prosecution' approach to digital assets. This move has left open questions about where the new enforcement line actually sits, and the answer matters for every pending crypto fraud docket in the country.

The dismissal with prejudice permanently ends the indictment and bars prosecutors from refiling the charges. Authorities will focus on civil avenues to recover money for victims, while the defense reached an agreement in principle to resolve the pending wire fraud and unregistered securities counts.
