Michigan Lawmakers Propose Moratorium on Crypto Mining Facilities
A proposal aiming to regulate the growth of cryptocurrency mining in Michigan has been introduced to the state legislature.
House Bill 5882 would grant local municipalities explicit authority to impose moratoriums on the construction of both cryptocurrency mining facilities and large-scale data centers. This move comes amidst growing concerns from local communities regarding energy consumption, noise pollution, and strain on electrical grids.
The bill's introduction follows a trend of states increasingly treating AI data centers and cryptocurrency mining facilities as analogous entities when crafting restrictive legislation. By grouping the two industries together, lawmakers aim to block or pause their construction, citing environmental and infrastructural concerns.
