Ohio Data Center Boom Sparks Grid Strains, Residential Electricity Costs Rise

The rapid growth of data centers in Ohio has led to a significant increase in residential electricity prices, with some areas experiencing a 26% rise since early 2023. The growing demand from data centers, including those used for cryptocurrency mining, is partly responsible for the strain on the grid. According to Maureen Willis, who leads the Ohio Office of Consumers' Counsel, 'We have increased demand. And the supply is just not keeping up with that increased demand.'

The issue has been exacerbated by new data centers being built in areas such as Stark County, where one crypto operation could eventually use more power than all of the county's households combined. The increasing electricity costs are affecting residents, including Keith and Cheryl Kasnik, who live across the street from a growing cryptocurrency mining campus and saw their winter electric bills exceed $600.

Ohio lawmakers have proposed rules to handle data centers differently from other utility customers, which would include separate classifications, special tariffs, and substantial up-front payments. Some companies, such as AEP Ohio, have already implemented data center tariffs that sharply reduced the number of proposed projects in their pipeline.
