Tech Giants Unite Against Illegal Wildlife Trade with AI and Blockchain
A coalition of tech and blockchain companies has joined forces to combat illegal wildlife trade using AI detection tools and blockchain analytics. On June 22, Google, Meta, TikTok, Alibaba, PayPal, Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Vodafone, Safaricom, and British Airways announced their commitment to this initiative during London Climate Action Week. The group was convened by Prince William and The Royal Foundation's United for Wildlife.
The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to generate up to $23 billion annually, threatening the extinction of approximately one million plant and animal species. The participating tech platforms collectively represent about 20% of global e-commerce and reach 90% of the world's social media users.
The strategy involves using AI capabilities to detect and remove illicit wildlife listings before they reach buyers. Meanwhile, PayPal, Chainalysis, and TRM Labs will focus on disrupting financial flows that make wildlife trafficking profitable by tracing on-chain transactions and identifying wallets linked to illicit activity.
