Intesa Sanpaolo Buys $18 Million XRP Position Through Grayscale Trust
Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, has purchased an $18 million position in XRP through Grayscale's trust. This is not a direct purchase on a crypto exchange or through self-custody, but rather through a trust share that can be easily traded as a security.
The choice of a trust over other options such as ETFs and direct custody reveals the constraints faced by banks in holding cryptocurrencies. The use of a trust allows for easier capital treatment and accounting, making it an attractive option for banks with limited resources or expertise in crypto custody.
This purchase is part of a larger trend of increasing bank exposure to crypto, with aggregate holdings more than doubling across two quarters from $100 million to $235 million among European institutions.
The choice of XRP as the cryptocurrency held by Intesa Sanpaolo may also be significant, as it highlights the asset's role in cross-border payments and digital financial infrastructure.
