Lean Ethereum Roadmap Draws Pushback Over Ambitious Timeline

Vitalik Buterin has outlined Lean Ethereum, a sweeping redesign of the network that he calls its third major evolution after the Merge. The upgrades will roll out across three to four years and touch nearly every core part of the protocol.

The strawmap, an Ethereum Foundation draft, outlines Recursive STARKs as the central cryptographic proof system to verify the chain without forcing every node to re-execute transactions.

Quantum safety has also jumped up the list, with the roadmap swapping quantum-vulnerable cryptography for hash-based schemes built to outlast quantum computers. This shift echoes NIST's post-quantum encryption standards finalized in 2024.

The most disruptive change targets how Ethereum stores data, keeping today's core protocol architecture intact but adding a restrictive new state type that scales toward 100 TB by 2030.

However, the Lean Ethereum schedule drew fast pushback from experts. Dankrad Feist praised the vision but called three to four years 'very slow', suggesting it could be achieved in ~1 year with LLMs. Others urged caution and underpromising over fear of under-delivery.
