Bitcoin Blunder May Have Spooked Kidnappers in Arizona Disappearance Case

Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old Tucson, Arizona resident, disappeared on January 31, 2026. Ransom notes demanding between $4 million and $6 million in Bitcoin followed.

The FBI attempted to track the kidnappers by depositing $152 in Bitcoin into the wallet specified in the ransom note. However, the funds sat untouched, leading investigators to believe that the deposit itself may have spooked the kidnappers.

This 'crypto kidnapping' case has left authorities stumped, with multiple additional ransom notes surfacing after the initial deposit went cold. Some of these subsequent notes requested 1 BTC (approximately $50,000 to $67,000) in exchange for leads or information about the kidnappers themselves.

The FBI and Pima County authorities have offered a $50,000 reward for information. Despite this, no significant breakthroughs have been reported as of late June 2026.
