Altcoin Season Model Declared Dead as Cryptocurrency Market Experiences Bearish Sentiment
The cryptocurrency market has been experiencing a period of bearish sentiment, with alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins) facing significant declines in price. According to Bitwise's chief investment officer, Matt Hougan, the traditional altcoin season model is no longer relevant.
Hougan believes that future market cycles will be more selective, with only tokens supporting legitimate businesses or demonstrable use cases experiencing substantial price appreciation. This marks a departure from earlier market cycles, where Bitcoin would surge initially followed by capital rotation into Ether and eventually smaller-cap altcoins.
The decline in retail enthusiasm for altcoins is evident in social media discussions, which have reached their lowest point in at least 24 months according to Santiment's analysis. Historically, such quietness has preceded market rebounds, with periods of silence often seeing accumulation occurring beneath the surface.
