US House Passes Bill Banning CBDCs Until 2030 Amid Housing Package

The US House of Representatives has passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which includes a provision banning central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) until December 31, 2030. The bill was approved by a vote of 358-32 and now heads to President Donald Trump's desk for signature.

The legislation blocks the Federal Reserve from issuing or creating a CBDC or any substantially similar digital asset during this time period. However, it does include an exception for dollar-denominated crypto stablecoins that are open, permissionless, and private.

Congressional efforts to restrict CBDCs have been ongoing, with Republicans pushing for bans in previous legislation. The language in the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act revives concepts associated with Representative Tom Emmer's Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act.
