US Treasury Secretary Calls for Clearer Crypto Regulations
Former US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged Congress to take action on cryptocurrency regulations, citing the need for clarity and stability in the market. In an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, Bessent highlighted the importance of passing the Clarity Act, which would provide a clear framework for regulating digital assets.
Bessent noted that the US is lagging behind other countries, such as Abu Dhabi and Singapore, which have established clearer rules and regulations for the crypto industry. He warned that this uncertainty has led to many companies choosing to operate overseas, where the regulatory environment is more favorable.
The Clarity Act would address some of these issues by splitting regulatory authority more clearly, creating registration paths for trading platforms and intermediaries, and providing guidance on when a cryptocurrency counts as a security. Bessent emphasized that this is not just about protecting consumers, but also about ensuring that the next generation of financial innovation is built in the US.
