Coinbase Confronts Design Flaw Behind Multi-Hour Outage

Coinbase, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges, recently suffered a multi-hour outage that impacted its services. The issue occurred when a room in an Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center overheated due to multiple chillers failing.

According to CEO Brian Armstrong, the root cause of the outage was a design flaw in Coinbase's architecture. While the exchange is designed to be resilient against downtime in any one AWS Availability Zone (AZ), its systems did not perform as expected during the broader AWS outage.

Armstrong noted that exchanges have unique architectures that prioritize latency and client co-location, making it challenging to make them completely resistant to AZ failures without introducing significant latency delays. He emphasized that Coinbase is revisiting these trade-offs to ensure users receive the best possible trading experience.
