Ethereum's Roadmap Emphasizes Decentralization and Self-Sustainability

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, highlighted the need for his platform to maintain functionality and security even in the absence of key developers. Speaking at the Hong Kong Web3 Festival, Buterin discussed the importance of decentralization and self-sustainability in blockchain systems.

The concept of the 'walkaway test' was introduced as a benchmark to measure whether Ethereum can continue operating effectively without its core development team. This test aims to evaluate the network's ability to maintain stability and security even if key developers choose to step away or retire. Buterin cited Bitcoin as an example of a system that has managed to run without ongoing intervention from its original creators.

Buterin emphasized that Ethereum is designed with principles of decentralization, formal verification, and quantum resistance in mind. He highlighted the significance of formal verification, which uses mathematical proofs to check the correctness of code, in minimizing software flaws and fortifying the network. The importance of quantum resistance was also mentioned as a measure to protect against potential threats posed by quantum computing.

Ethereum's focus on security rather than transaction speed was reemphasized by Buterin. He stated that the network is meant to be the secure, decentralized chain that users can rely on. By prioritizing safety and decentralization over speed, Ethereum aims to become a robust and self-sustaining platform for complex digital assets and smart contracts.
