A modder has unlocked the full potential of a budget gaming PC based on a refurbished PlayStation 5 APU, known as the AMD BC-250. The board, originally used by crypto miners in late 2022, is paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a compact motherboard.
The modder, who goes by the name of The Phawx, used a Linux mod to unlock all 40 GPU compute units using a kernel module parameter. This increased performance allowed the APU to run at 4.1GHz and the unlocked GPU at 2.2GHz, resulting in frame rates above 60fps at 1080p.
The Phawx tested the BC-250 in multiple games, including Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, God of War Ragnarök, and Cyberpunk 2077, all of which ran above 70fps on average. However, the older CPU held back performance somewhat, resulting in lower 1% lows.
