Cash App Expands Cryptocurrency Offerings with USDC Support

Block Inc.'s Cash App has made a significant foray into the world of stablecoins with its latest feature: support for USDC transactions across four blockchain networks. The addition allows users to send and receive Circle's USDC stablecoin without incurring any fees, which is automatically converted to U.S. dollars in their accounts.

The functionality is now available on Solana, Ethereum, Polygon, and Arbitrum networks, marking one of the most substantial cryptocurrency expansions Cash App has undertaken since integrating Bitcoin functionality several years ago. This move comes as a departure from Block's previous Bitcoin-centric philosophy, which has been championed by Jack Dorsey.

According to Miles Suter, who leads Bitcoin product development at Block, the process operates directly from users' standard dollar balances, eliminating the need for maintaining separate cryptocurrency wallets or navigating across different blockchain networks. The feature remains unavailable to New York state residents currently and requires identity verification procedures before accessing it, along with enforced transfer limits.

Cash App's user base of 59 million monthly active accounts now has access to this new functionality. Block's stock price climbed approximately 3.5% following the announcement, with the company maintaining over 9,000 Bitcoin in its corporate treasury. The introduction of stablecoin support also underscores the growing adoption and market capitalization of these digital assets.
