Canada Moves to Regulate Cryptocurrency ATMs Amid Fraud Concerns
The Canadian government has announced plans to ban cryptocurrency ATMs nationwide, citing concerns over fraud and a lack of regulation. According to officials, crypto ATMs are widely used in scam operations, with victims often instructed to transfer money through these machines.
With nearly 4,000 crypto ATMs in operation across Canada, the country has the highest number per capita globally. These machines allow users to deposit cash and convert it into cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, but lack industry-specific regulations and often require minimal verification.
The proposed ban is part of a wider effort to address fraud risks tied to digital asset access points. Lawmakers are also advancing legislation to block digital asset donations in federal elections, citing challenges in verifying donor identities and tracing the origin of funds.
