The recent Pyth Network outage has highlighted the importance of reliable oracle networks in the DeFi ecosystem. On May 22, the network experienced a multi-hour disruption that affected its price feeds and sponsored feeds used by various applications.
The incident began at around 06:58 when Pythnet validators stopped creating blocks, resulting in a halt to new prices being produced. The root cause of the outage was later identified, and validators coordinated a restart, restoring Pyth Core Feeds before Hermes endpoints and Sponsored Feeds were resolved.
The outage had a significant impact on DeFi protocols that rely on real-time price data for trading, lending, and liquidation. Several protocols, including WaterX Beta and BrownFi, took defensive action to protect users from stale prices, demonstrating the potential risks associated with oracle downtime.
