Bitcoin's Quantum Resistance Dilemma: Prepare Now or Risk Future Disruption
Coinbase's independent advisory board of cryptography experts has issued a report urging Bitcoin to begin preparations for quantum-resistant security immediately. The report notes that while current quantum computers do not pose a threat, uncertainty around future advances in quantum computing warrants early planning to avoid disruption later.
The debate centers on legacy coins held in addresses protected by existing ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. Some community members support establishing a migration deadline after which those signature schemes would no longer be accepted, effectively freezing coins that have not moved to quantum-resistant addresses.
Others argue that rendering coins unspendable would amount to confiscation of private property and conflict with Bitcoin's long-standing principles of immutability and user control over assets. The advisory board declined to recommend a preferred outcome for legacy Bitcoin holdings, leaving the decision to the Bitcoin community itself.
