Australia Mandates Clean Energy for Big Tech Data Centers
Australia is cracking down on large AI data centres by introducing mandatory clean energy rules. The new standards will require operators to support their own power supply through renewable energy, improve water efficiency, and consult with communities where developments are planned.
The Australian Government has established an Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to oversee implementation. The office will use a whole-of-government approach to ensure compliance with the new standards.
Crypto mining is not specifically targeted by the regulations, but businesses combining AI and digital asset infrastructure could still be affected. Companies like IREN, which has announced plans for an 800-megawatt AI data centre campus in South Australia, may need to adapt to the new requirements.
