UK Government Imposes Moratorium on Cryptocurrency Donations in Politics

The UK government has taken steps to regulate cryptocurrency donations in politics, announcing a moratorium on such donations following an urgent review into foreign interference.

The Rycroft Review, published in March 2026, recommended that the government introduce a moratorium on political donations made in cryptoassets until Parliament and the Electoral Commission can ensure that relevant regulation is effective.

This move comes after concerns were raised over the use of cryptocurrencies to mask the origin of donations and evade robust checks on the true source of funds.
