BitMEX to Shut Down Cryptocurrency Derivatives Trading Platform
BitMEX, a pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform, will shut down on September 23 after over 11 years of operation. The decision to cease operations was made following a strategic review of both the business and the crypto industry as a whole.
The exchange has been active since 2014 and helped shape the modern crypto derivatives market with its introduction of 100x leveraged perpetual swaps, a product that became an industry standard.
Despite being one of the largest crypto exchanges in its peak, BitMEX faced regulatory challenges, including US authorities going after its founders in 2020 for violating anti-money laundering laws. The company settled and pleaded guilty to Bank Secrecy Act violations.
The platform will remain operational until September 23, but with restrictions gradually imposed as the shutdown approaches. Users are urged to close all open positions and withdraw their assets before the deadline.
